RULES - HTML FORMAT

LHGCL's mission statement is:

Dedicated to the promotion and advancement of the most competitive
female soccer players and teams within North Texas.

In keeping with our mission statement, the board has instituted the following change to the league playing format:  Division I qualifying games between the Division I teams that did not earn a Division I bye and the top finishing Division II teams has been moved to April and May.

1.  Why challenges are in the spring.

2.   What will the playing format for these challenge games be?  UPDATED

3.  What happens if a team who is qualified to play in the challenge games disbands or declares that they will be disbanding prior to the next season?

4 What happens if a team that qualifies for Division I does not keep N+1

5 Team responsibilities for challenge games

6.  What happens to a team that plays in these challenge games and, unbeknownst to them, do not keep N+1 after tryouts?

*************************************

1.      Why challenges are in the spring.

When players are deciding which team(s) to tryout for, a major concern and a major source of stress for some players is where the team will play in the following soccer year.  There is always a question for these players as to which teams will actually make Division I, and which will make Division II.  With this new format, everything will be decided prior to tryouts.  This eliminates this stress on the players, and helps them have more information to decide which team best fits their abilities and their goals.

We also believe this will help strengthen the teams that earn places in Division I, making the division more competitive.  Division II teams will benefit, as players who prefer to play on a Division II team can join a team they know will be in Division II.  All participating teams will benefit from not having to play these crucial games in the oppressive heat of August.

2.      What will the playing format for these challenge games be? UPDATED

DIVISION I CHALLENGE FORMAT

The standings will be calculated on the following 10-point system:

6 points for a win                                 1 point for each goal scored, up to a maximum of 3
3 points for a tie                                   1 point for a shutout
0 points for a loss                                A 0-0 tie is 4 points to each team

Under 11, 13, 15, 16, 17

These age groups will have four teams trying for two spots in Division I.  They will consist of round robin games, with each team playing the other three teams one time.

Seeding will be assigned as follows at the conclusion of Spring League play:

Next to the last place Division I – Seed 1                         1st place Division II – Seed 3
Last place Division I – Seed 2                                            2nd place Division II – Seed 4

Games may end in a tie.  Points will be accumulated according to the system above.  At the end of the round robin, teams will be ranked one through four.

After the games are completed, the top two teams with the highest points will qualify for Division I in the Fall, provided they keep their n+1. The third and fourth place teams will have a bye in Division II, provided they keep their n+1.  Should any team with a Division I bye for the Fall fail to keep their n+1, the third place team will automatically move to Division I, provided they keep their n+1.  If two teams lose their bye, both the third and fourth place teams will move into Division I, provided they keep their n+1.

Under 12

Six teams will be competing for two spots in Division I.

Seeding will be assigned as follows at the conclusion of Spring League play:

7th place Division I – Seed 1                               10th place Division I – Seed 4
8th place Division I – Seed 2                               1st place Division II – Seed 5
9th place Division I – Seed 3                               2nd place Division II – Seed 6

In the first round, Seed 3 will play Seed 6 and Seed 4 will play Seed 5. Seeds 1 and 2 will have a bye in the first round.  These games will be single elimination games that must end with a winner.  The winner of these two games will go on to round two.

Round two will be round robin games with the two winners of the first round plus Seed 1 and Seed 2.  Games may end in a tie.  Points will be accumulated according to the system above.  At the end of the round robin, teams will be ranked one through four.

After the games are completed, the top two teams with the highest points will qualify for Division I in the Fall, provided they keep their n+1. The third and fourth place teams, as well as the two teams eliminated in the first round, will have a bye in Division II, provided they keep their n+1.  Should any team with a Division I bye for the Fall fail to keep their n+1, the third place team will automatically move to Division I, provided they keep their n+1.  If two teams lose their bye, both the third and fourth place teams will move into Division I, provided they keep their n+1.

Under 14

Format will be the same as U12, with the exception of the seeding.  The seeding will be as follows:

5th place Division I – Seed 1                               8th place Division I – Seed 4
6th place Division I – Seed 2                               1st place Division II – Seed 5
7th place Division I – Seed 3                               2nd place Division II – Seed 6

3.  What happens if a team who is qualified to play in the challenge games disbands or declares that they will be disbanding prior to the next season?

In this case, we will change the format of the games to accommodate the number of teams who are eligible to play.  Again, only the Division I teams that have not secured a Division I bye and the top two finishing Division II teams will be eligible to play in these challenge games.

4.  What happens if a team that qualifies for Division I does not maintain N+1?

In age divisions where there are only four teams playing for the Division I spot, we will take the third place team from the challenge games.  If the third and fourth place teams from the challenge games are tied in points and tied head-to-head, then we will have a playoff game between those two teams.

In age divisions where there are six teams playing for the Division I spot, if the two losing teams from the second round come from the same preliminary bracket, then we will take the team who finished highest in the preliminary bracket.  If there was a tie, or if they haven't played each other in the challenge games, we will schedule a playoff game for that spot.

Playoff games will be scheduled after tryouts at a mutually agreeable time, but must be played prior to the end of the qualifying tournament.  If a mutually agreeable time cannot be determined, the league will set the schedule with the information available.

5.  Team responsibilities for challenge games

Teams who are qualified to play in these challenge games who believe they may not keep N+1 for the following year, or who believe they may disband prior to next season, should inform us immediately so we can format the challenge games accordingly.

The entry fee for these challenge games is $400 per team.  This amount will be deferred until the following fall.  So, teams that play in these games are required to send $400 when they send their fall rosters in by the deadline of Wednesday, July 16, 2003.

Teams will pay the referees at the field.  Each team should pay 1/2 the middle, and one lines person at the field prior to each game.  Referee fees will be the same as for league games by age group.

Be sure to check the Bye Team Information page for more information.

6.  What happens to a team that plays in these challenge games and, unbeknownst to them, do not keep N+1 after tryouts?

All teams who played in the challenge games must maintain N+1 to be qualified to play in the league as they finished in the challenge games.  Any team that finds itself in the situation where they do not keep N+1 after tryouts should notify the league immediately.

bulletIf a team that qualified for Division I fails to maintain N+1, See No. 4 above
bulletIf a team that qualified for Division II fails to maintain N+1, the team will be required to enter the qualifying tournament.  The team must meet all entry requirements by the deadline, including paying the entry fee of $600.  The team's $400 fee from the challenge game will be applied toward the $600 fee.  There will be one additional Division II spot to be earned during the qualifying tournament.
bulletTeams that play in these challenge games are getting a bye back into the league (either Division I or Division II).  However, no bye fee will be required from these teams, since they are paying for the challenge games.
